Emergency Medical Services Program Overview
-
Emergency Medical Services is a fast-paced field that is confronted with different and life-threatening challenges every day. The EMS program at the Olathe Public Schools Innovation Campus will introduce students to the world of emergency medicine. While the focus is primarily on the pre-hospital patient care setting, many concepts and skills taught are also incorporated into emergency room care. Students will learn lifesaving skills within the first weeks of school and will continue to learn new lifesaving skills with patient assessment skills throughout the program. Students will learn to apply these skills in lifelike simulation and scenarios to help solidify their knowledge and abilities to handle medical emergencies.
Students will learn about EMS professions and the integrated services and systems of healthcare, public health, 911 call center, and public safety. They will receive skills training in CPR, patient assessment, airway management, fracture management, ECG understanding, and trauma management. Students will participate in ride-alongs through Johnson County Med-Act, shadow 911 dispatchers and emergency room professionals. Students must be in good standing, demonstrate professionalism, and have good attendance.
