Art was highly respected by his peers in the newspaper industry, as well as the government officials he so often wrote about in his three decades-long column for The San Francisco News. His career as a newspaperman began following graduation from Reed College in Portland, Ore., and six months as a journalism professor at the University of Oregon. It was interrupted by World War I and a year of service in the U.S. Army. His columns ranged from humorous to political and included a 1949 interview with Gen. Douglas MacArthur. In late 1930, he traveled on a 17,000-mile goodwill tour inviting leaders of 78 cities in 27 South American countries to the Pan-American Reciprocal Trade Conference in San Francisco. Following his death in 1965, the California Legislature, as well as the city and county of San Francisco, made resolutions noting his long and distinguished newspaper career. Art once wrote in his column: “San Francisco is my town now. But I wouldn’t trade that 100-year-old spot in the sunflower state of Kansas for any other growing-up place on earth.”
