Floyd was captain of his high school football team, and played football at Fort Scott Community College and the University of Florida. He is a member of the National Junior College Football Hall of Fame and National Collegiate Football Hall of Fame. The Floyd and Joan Huggins scholarship fund at Fort Scott helps out-of-state players in financial need. He earned degrees in education from the University of Florida and Pittsburg State University. He was contracted by the Cleveland Browns football team, but had to leave to serve 22 months at the Olathe Naval Station because of the Korean War. He played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers during the 1954 season. An injury cut his professional playing career short, but launched his coaching career at high schools in Florida as well as colleges in Kansas and Texas. He became vice president of Fidelity Union Life Insurance Company before retiring after 21 years. He served as president of the Mid-America Saddlebred Horse club, and on the Johnson County Community College Board of Trustees and Kansas City Sports Commission.
