-
Distinguished Person of Honor
(June 17, 1925 — April 21, 2012)
Melvin grew up in Woodbine, Kansas where he developed a strong sense of community and often referenced this experience in his annual Convocation address to Olathe district staff. Before being Olathe’s superintendent from 1968-1991, he was in the Parsons, Kansas district. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia State and his doctorate in Education Administration from the University of Kansas. The Olathe student enrollment rose from 4,433 to 15,356 and several schools were added during his tenure. Among his career accomplishments were the enactment of a progressive pay scale for all professionals and staff; greater health benefits and sick leave; professional council for teachers and administrators; and special curriculum overseers to assist teachers with new teaching concepts. Melvin served on several education boards, was named the Educator of the Year in 1980 by the American Counselor Association and received the KU Educational Alumni Association “Apple” Award for Distinguished Service in 1991. He was involved with several civic groups and was named Olathe Citizen of the Year in 1991. In retirement, he enjoyed tennis, golf and spending time with his grandchildren. Melvin was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, having served as a naval air cadet in World War II.
