What is AVID?
-
The Advancement Via Individual Determination, or A.V.I.D. system, is a Nationally Recognized College Preparatory Path, serving high school students in a four-year program that prepares them for increased success in their post-secondary studies. A.V.I.D. provides students with tools and experiences that will help them to be successful in high school and post-secondary education.
In the Olathe Public Schools, A.V.I.D. is a rich program that gives students tools to succeed in life after high school graduation. A.V.I.D. students enjoy support as they pursue academic rigor in their coursework, building college readiness skills. Students are afforded opportunities to visit college campuses, and are given assistance with college and scholarship applications.

The AVID Student Profile: A.V.I.D. students have a desire to pursue a post-high school education, possess an internal drive to succeed, and are hard workers. Although they may need support with organization and study skills, they are capable of rigorous coursework with support. Students are often, but not always, first-generation college students.
The AVID Student Experience: In the A.V.I.D. system, students keep and maintain an organizational system, take focused notes, and utilize a planner. In addition, students will participate in community service projects and are encouraged to be a member of a club/activity and/or sport and pursue leadership opportunities. Academic coursework includes an expectation to take honors/advanced classes and attend college-visit field trips with their A.V.I.D. class. Students also receive support with post-high school plans, scholarships, and college applications. A.V.I.D. students benefit from a family atmosphere, academic and social support, and team-building activities. Students will have an A.V.I.D. class in their class schedule every semester throughout high school from from the time they enter the program.
