Olathe Leadership Lowrider Bike Club
-
The Olathe chapter of the Leadership Lowrider Bike Club was established in 2017 in the Olathe Public Schools. The mission is to help students in high school find a sense of belonging and support both socially and academically. This program allows students to receive weekly mentoring, academic support, community service, and leadership development through the art community, all while building custom bikes that they earn upon high school graduation. Since the club’s inception, 400 bikes have been donated to the community, and over 1,500 elementary students have been supported through one-on-one mentoring and all-school assemblies. Students within the program have achieved a 100% graduation rate.
Since 2017, the club has gained local and national recognition, being featured in various media outlets such as NBC, NPR Kansas City, and interviewed by Joe Ray, editor of Lowrider Magazine. The club was also showcased on Stacey David’s GearZ (Season 14, Episode 12). Our Albuquerque and Española chapters were recently featured on 60 Minutes, further highlighting the program’s impact.
The Leadership Lowrider Bike Club works closely with law enforcement, city officials, and local partners to foster community engagement and help students develop their leadership skills. In collaboration with the Olathe Police Department and student members, the club has designed custom bikes, provided mentorship, and customized a lowrider police car. The chapter also partners with local art museums to display various custom bikes, including a tricycle designed for the Olathe Fire Department and a piece at the Johnson County Museum.
Our bike club now has chapters at four Olathe middle schools (Indian Trail, Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, and Pioneer Trail) as well as chapters nationally in Kansas City, San Diego, Albuquerque, Española, Pueblo (Colorado), Four Corners (New Mexico), and the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center.
In September 2023, the bike club received national attention by unveiling a student-built bike at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Headquarters in Washington, D.C. This bike, a collaboration between students in Olathe and Albuquerque, is currently on display at the DEA Museum.
In July 2025, the club will be featured as student artists at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the Smithsonian Institution is adding a photograph of our club — taken by former club member Christopher Erazo — to its collection. One of our Bike Club shirts will also be displayed in the Corazón y Vida: Lowrider Culture exhibit at the Smithsonian beginning in October 2025.
The Lowrider Bike Club meets Mondays from 2:45-4:45 p.m. at Olathe Advanced Technical Center, 611 N. Nelson Road, Olathe, KS 66061. It is open to all Olathe Public Schools high school students. No registration is required.
